VISION
Our Vision
The Future Metrology Hub’s vision is to transform the UK’s manufacturing performance by delivering significant improvements in the speed, accuracy and cost of measurement.
Metrology underpins manufacturing, with product verification typically accounting for 20% of product costs (£30bn+ per annum in the UK alone). The constant drive for greater customisation, accuracy and speed, with reduced cost, waste and energy usage, as well as enhanced product quality, has seen measurement technologies and methods become essential in enhancing productivity, and it is widely recognised by Government that metrology has an even more critical role in the future.
The Hub’s vision is to break through formidable scientific and engineering barriers and develop archetypes for the next generation of disruptive sensors/instruments, resilient interpretable metrology informatics and whole-system-approach control, applicable to any precision sustainable manufacturing sector.

Research carried out at the University of Huddersfield and at our spoke partner Universities in Oxford, Southampton, Heriot-Watt University and Queen’s University Belfast and Bath will address three key challenges:
- Developing novel photonics sensors for sustainable manufacturing.
- Creating resilient, interpretable metrology capable of generating actionable information for intelligent systems.
- Unifying whole system control to create robust machinery control systems to drive process optimisation and resource efficiency.
With a core investment of over £13 million, the Hub is a key part of the UK Government’s research strategy to ensure that the UK becomes more competitive and productive.
